Samuel Crompton - inventor of the 'Spinning Mule', a machine that span textile fibres, which allowed Manchester to firmly establish itself within the burgeoning textile industry.
Sir Richard Arkwright - inventor of the industrial cotton spinning mill, which was horse-driven and paved the way to efficient mass production.
George Garrett - British clergyman and pioneer of submarine design.
Sir Frederick Henry Royce - Creator of the Rolls Royce brand of vehicles, setting up his first workshop in Manchester.
Professor Tom Kilburn CBE - Designer and developer of the first 'Baby Computer' capable of stored memory at Manchester University, which was a clear predecessor to the modern desktop pc seen today.
